Libraries and me

I want to be an RML.Isn’t a PhD in Educational Technology enough? No.

Here’s why: I want as much flexibility in my career choice as possible so I can move wherever I *want to live* rather than wherever I *need* to move in order to get a job. I’m currently well-positioned to work at what I call a “crunchy” college or university, but only one that has an opening in Instructional Technology, and preferably one that values local education over distance education (which is all the rage these days). But I’d like to widen the net, and if I had a Masters in Library Science, it would nicely supplement my PhD in Education, and further encourage the development of my interest in literacy and informational tools. With it, I’d have the flexibility to follow my mate and get a job any place that has a library. In theory. And for me, where I am, and what I’m doing, is considerably more important than how much I make.

It’s also more structured of a program (I understand) than my current PhD, and I suspect that means that advisers take some steps to help you along (or maybe that’s just a dream I have). It’s a 2-year program that my friend Keli finished in 1.5 years (so it should only take me, like, um… 3 years).

Finally, the sheer romance of being a Radical Militant Librarian is hard for me to pass.
